GIS 5945 Blogpost 1

 For my internship, I will focus on updating the GIS data for St. Michael's Cemetery to create a publishable dataset, as well as developing an updated GIS Web Application. Currently, the Cemetery GIS map is accessible in a webmap builder that has ended support, so the internship effort will feature moving the map to the new Experience Builder. This work will be done as part of my current job with the University of West Florida Archaeology Institute

I'm a member of the Women in GIS user group, which has had excellent learning opportunities for members, from preparing for GISP certification. They offer virtual office hours as well as standing community of practice meetings across multiple industry sectors.  Membership is geared towards women and allies of women in the GIS workplace.

GIS 5103 Module 5 - Explore & Manipulate Data

For this week we had to work with creating a new fGDB and then listing the feature classes to be copied to the new geodatabase using Python, each shapefile is then copied to the geodatabase  After iterating through each geodatabase a search cursor is initiated in order to produce the county seats within the cities shapefile along with their population Finally, a new dictionary called county seats is created and each of the county seats and their population is fed into the new dictionary and the new dictionary is printed

 For this week's exercise, we spent a considerable amount of time evaluating out-of-date elevation data, looking at the potential impact of storm surge data. This included comparing potential inundation models using LIDAR and USGS DEM-derived data. For the first exercise we were asked to compare Lidar data from New Jersey pre and post Hurricane Sandy. We were given several areas to asses and evaluate what has changed as well as looking at how the area has redeveloped based on a more recently derived buildings shapefile. We then turned our attention to the Tampa Bay Area where we looked at different methods of modeling storm surge and evaluated the predictive ability of each model.
